DVD 5013 DON CARLO

I love this Opera in all its guises,whether it be 4 Acts,or 5(I prefer it in 5 and in french and COMPLETE,which this is not)but with a cast like this,all in fantastic voice,what could go wrong?Well to start with the production is disasterous,but all this is made up for by Margaret Price as Elisabetta Di Valois,looking quite trim,vocally creamy with a great top to her voice,and enough stamina to ride the ensembles,Yelena Obratsova,I have had trouble with in the past,I have found her gutsy a,d gusty,but here she seems to be in control of her voice more,and provides a good foil for Price,Domingo has always been a great Don Carlo,and here he does not disapoint,Renato Bruson has been the "King" of Verdi baritones for ages,and his great Verdian line is here in evidence,his voice is smooth,and rises to the challenge that Verdi gave this role,Nesterenko is also great as Philip,his magnificent voice filling out the strengh and pathos of this role,apart from the production,this performance is near perfect.
