Romantic and veristic splendour!
Thomas Peter Koppel

An early Maurizio from Carreras - a part he would do quite a lot in the years to come and for the most part with his fellow-Catalonian and soprano per se, Caballé, by his side. The Tokyo performance in 1976 and the run at the Met in 1978 with these two are the most famous renderings, but this one is also fun to have! You can understand, they found so much delight in doing this not so standardish opera - the music is wonderfully melodic and the parts have all the romantic and veristic splendour. November 7th 1972.
